Five days out and back from Reykjavík to Höfn along the Ring Road, about 460 km each way on paved road, with short driving days so each stop gets time. Day one reaches Hella by way of Hveragerði and the warm river in Reykjadalur. Day two is the busiest: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue, Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara, then a night in Vík. Day three crosses the Eldhraun lava field to Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and Skaftafell. Day four takes in the glacier lagoons at Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón and ends in Höfn. The drive home is long and is better split with an overnight stop in Vík or Hella. With two or three days, turn back at Vík or at Jökulsárlón; a same-day return to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík is mostly windscreen. Go onto glaciers and into ice caves only with certified guides, and keep well back from the waves at Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach. October to April calls for a 4x4 on winter tyres, daylight driving and a spare day.
