Skaftafell, South Iceland
Welcome to Glacier Adventures Iceland — we've been guiding people onto the ice since 2010, and it still takes our breath away every single time. Our home base is at Skaftafell, inside Vatnajökull National Park, where two of Iceland's most spectacular glacier tongues — Svínafellsjökull and Skaftafellsjökull — flow down from the vast ice cap above. Walking on a glacier is unlike anything else you'll ever do. The ice is alive — constantly moving, cracking, and reshaping itself into ridges, crevasses, and impossibly blue formations. Our certified guides know these glaciers intimately. They've walked them in every season and every kind of weather, and they'll make sure you're safe while showing you the most incredible spots. We offer three different experiences. Our Glacier Hike for Beginners is a three-hour guided walk on Svínafellsjökull that requires no previous experience — just reasonable fitness and a sense of adventure. You'll walk on ancient ice, peer into crevasses, and learn how glaciers form and why they're changing. Our Advanced Glacier Hike is a five-hour expedition for those who want to go deeper — it includes ice climbing with axes and crampons, and you'll reach areas of the glacier that few people ever see. From November through March, we also run Ice Cave Exploration tours, taking you inside naturally formed ice caves that glow an ethereal blue. These caves are different every year, which makes each visit truly unique. All safety equipment is included in every tour: crampons, ice axes, helmets, and harnesses. Our guides carry rescue equipment and are trained in glacier first aid. We check conditions every morning and will never take you anywhere we don't consider safe. If conditions are too dangerous, we'll reschedule — your safety is non-negotiable. The meeting point for all tours is the Skaftafell Visitor Center, which has parking, a cafe, and restrooms. We recommend arriving fifteen minutes before your tour time for gear fitting. Wear warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots — we provide everything else. The minimum age for our tours is ten years, and we ask that all participants be in reasonable physical condition. Our beginner tour is genuinely beginner-friendly — we've had guests from eight to eighty enjoy it. Skaftafell is one of Iceland's most beautiful areas, surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls (Svartifoss with its basalt columns is a must-see), and vast wilderness. Many of our guests combine a glacier hike with a visit to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, which is just 45 minutes east. Come walk on ice with us — it's an experience you'll never forget.
