Um

Welcome to Vík Wool & Craft Workshop — where Icelandic knitting tradition meets hands-on creativity. We're a small workshop and shop in the heart of Vík, run by a group of local artisans who are passionate about keeping Iceland's textile heritage alive and sharing it with visitors from around the world. Icelandic wool — lopi — is unlike any other wool on Earth. It comes from sheep that have been bred in isolation for over a thousand years, and it has a unique dual-fiber structure: a tough outer layer that repels water and wind, and a soft inner layer that insulates incredibly well. That's why the Icelandic lopapeysa sweater has become one of the most iconic garments in the world — it's genuinely functional, designed for a country where the weather can change from sunshine to blizzard in minutes. We offer three different workshop experiences. Our Knitting Introduction is a one-and-a-half-hour session perfect for complete beginners. You'll learn basic Icelandic stitches, handle real lopi yarn, and start creating something you can take home and finish on your own. All materials are included and yours to keep. Our Natural Wool Dyeing workshop is two hours of pure magic — you'll dye wool using Icelandic moss, berries, and plants, creating beautiful natural colors that have been used here for centuries. It's fascinating to see what colors come from these humble ingredients. And for the truly ambitious, our Lopapeysa Full Day Workshop is a six-hour deep dive into creating your own Icelandic sweater. Lunch is included, along with expert guidance and all the yarn you'll need. Even if you don't finish in one day, you'll leave with enough knowledge to complete it at home. Our workshops are kept small — six to eight people maximum — so you get real personal attention from our artisans. They're happy to share stories about Icelandic knitting culture, the history of the lopapeysa, and the role wool has played in Icelandic life for centuries. Even if you're not joining a workshop, our shop is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. We sell handmade woolens — sweaters, hats, scarves, mittens, and blankets — all made by local knitters. We also have lopi yarn and patterns so you can start your own project at home. Every item in our shop is handmade in Iceland — no factory production, no imports. We're right in the center of Vík, easy to find on the main street. No booking needed for the shop, but workshops should be booked in advance as they fill up, especially in summer. Whether you're a seasoned knitter or have never held a needle, come say hello. There's something deeply satisfying about creating something beautiful with your own hands, especially using wool from sheep that graze on the hillsides right outside our door.
